Mount Kenya climbing can mean anything from scenic hiking and multi-day trekking to a high-altitude summit of Point Lenana or a full technical alpine expedition to Batian and Nelion. Point Lenana at approximately 4,985 metres is the mountain's main non-technical trekking summit. It can be reached on several multi-day routes and is suitable for prepared hikers who can handle altitude, cold conditions and consecutive trekking days.

Batian at 5,199 metres is Mount Kenya's highest summit, while Nelion at 5,188 metres is the second highest. Both are technical alpine objectives requiring appropriate rock-climbing experience, equipment, acclimatization and route-specific planning.

Climbers can approach the mountain through the Sirimon, Chogoria, Naro Moru and Timau routes. Many itineraries combine two routes so that the ascent and descent offer different scenery, terrain and acclimatization profiles.
